Chelsea’s staggering market value revealed as ‘uncertainty’ hangs over Roman Abramovich

Chelsea’s market value has been pegged at around $2.1 billion as suitors are on ‘high alert’ over a possible sale of the football club.

The current European and world champions have come under pressure this week following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Abramovich, the current owner, was the subject of talks in parliament this week with calls from Labor MP Chris Bryant for the Russian-born businessman to be banned from owning Chelsea after he disclosed, under parliamentary privilege , a 2019 Interior Ministry document that revealed his ties to the Russian state and “corrupt activities and practices.”

Abramovich strongly denied such closeness to Vladimir Putin and the Russian state, but it caused concern and disruption within the Chelsea camp ahead of the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool.

Amid calls for Abramovich to be disciplined and his property stripped, Bloomberg revealed the club had already launched an investigation this month into the football club’s availability.

Other suitors are monitoring the situation and could prepare takeover offers if the situation were to deteriorate, but for how much could they acquire Chelsea?

According to KPMG’s valuation, the Blues are worth $2.1 billion, a huge sum that Abramovich should have or want to sell.

A representative for Chelsea declined to comment, while a spokesperson for Abramovich could not be reached for comment, according to Bloomberg, following allegations of a potential takeover.

With hundreds of sanctions already imposed on Russian banks, companies and individuals, Abramovich has so far remained untouched. However, the UK government has not ruled out adding to their list.
